Governorship Elections 2026: Key Battleground States to Watch

With governorship elections scheduled across several states in 2026, political analysts highlight the key contests that will determine the balance of power between Nigeria's major political parties.

Nigeria's political landscape is heating up as governorship elections approach in several states for 2026. The contests are being closely watched as indicators of the political momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Anambra, Bayelsa, Edo, and Kogi states are among the most closely contested, with the All Progressives Congress (APC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and Labour Party all fielding strong candidates.

In Edo State, political tension has been particularly pronounced following the dramatic fallout between Governor Monday Okpebholo and his predecessor. Both the APC and PDP have deployed significant resources to the state, making it one of the most expensive governorship contests in recent Nigerian political history.

Anambra State continues to be a stronghold of APGA, but the Labour Party's strong showing in the 2023 elections has created new competitive dynamics. Political watchers expect the Labour Party to make a significant push in the South-East.

In the North, Kogi State remains an APC fortress, but the opposition has gained ground following controversies over the state's financial management and security situation in the Kogi-Benue axis.

'These governorship elections will be a referendum on the performance of the federal government,' noted Prof. Akin Fadahunsi, a political scientist at the University of Ibadan. 'State-level outcomes in 2026 will significantly shape the presidential race in 2027.'

INEC has assured Nigerians that it will deploy BVAS technology and result viewing portal for all governorship elections, building on lessons from previous contests. Security agencies have also been placed on high alert in states with histories of electoral violence.
